Artistic Journey
To capture the likeness of a person on a canvas or drawing paper is a profoundly enriching experience. I have been working at it for many years and still feel a tingle of excitement and anticipation when I begin a new work. There is always hope that this time I will capture the truth of the person simply and elegantly. To this end I continue to study my craft and the work of artists who have gone before me.
It was with noted painter and teacher Maynard Stewart at San Jose State that I learned the principles of Classical drawing and painting. Stewart was strongly influenced by Frank Vincent Dumond at the Art Students' League in New York and Dumond in turn by Jules LeFebre in France. Thus I was fortunate to inherit the lineage of the Classical tradition.
Studied in Florence Italy with Nerina Simi, whose studio produced some of the finest painters in Europe. She was an important influence upon the great Italian master Pietro Annigoni.
Robert taught at Gonzaga in Florence and later at Seattle University and San Jose State University.
Robert works in oil, pastel, and various drawing media.
